Are you tired of eating the same dal everyday? Then try ONION DAL. A simple, satisfying dal goes well with rice. Its easy to prepare and tastes delicious.

1 cup toor dal
1 onion, thinly sliced
lemon size tamarind, Soak it in 1cup of hot water and extract juice. Throw the pulp
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
few curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
pinch of hing
salt to taste
1 whole red chilli, break into pieces
1 tsp red chilli powder
coriander leaves, for garnishing

Method:

1:  Wash and soak dal in 4 cups of water for 30 minutes or longer. Pressure cook dal for 2-3 whistles or  till mushy.

2: Turn off the heat and wait until steam has stopped before opening the pressure cooker. Mix dal well so there are no lumps. Add tamarind juice to the dal. If dal is thick add little water. The consistency of dal should neither be thick nor thin.

3: Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, hing, curry leaves, red chilli and saute for few seconds.

4: Now add onion and cook till they become tender.

5: Now add dal, salt, red chilli powder and boil for 5-8 minutes.
